will try to provide tips for all of us, since we all have unique operating
systems, preferences and levels of experience.

AOL: OPEN SES-WHAT
Most of us forget passwords from time to time, especially if we made
them
hard to guess in the first place. (The perfect password is easy for you to
remember and hard for others to guess, but those aims are often
contradictory.) What do you do if you forget your AOL password?
1. Get out the credit card you used to sign up for AOL. (You won't be
spending more, but need the card for ID.)
2. Call 1-888-265-8004
3. Wait for a customer service representative.
4. Tell them you forgot your password.
5. Answer questions about your name, billing address, and the last digits
of
your credit card (not just any card, but the one that gets your AOL
bills).
6. Write down the new password you're given.
7. Think of a better new password, one that makes sense to you but will be
un-obvious to others. Ideally it will include both letters and
numerals--making it harder to guess. It must be at least 6 characters
long.
8. Sign on to AOL using that new password given to you by AOL.
9. Go to Keyword: Passwords.
10. In the Change Your AOL Password dialog box, click on Change Password.
11. In the Change Your Password dialog box, type the new password you were
just given by AOL.
12. Type the new personal password you thought of. Then type it again.
You'll see two blanks for this (twice to make sure you get it just right).
13. Click on Change Password.
14. Click on OK. Then click on Cancel.
Now not even the AOL customer service reps will know your password.

AOL: PLACE SETTING
The My Places feature of AOL 5.0 puts your favorite sites on the
Welcome screen. At first, these are generic: Set My Places, Go To Web,
Parental Controls, and AOL Help. But you can put five of your own in
there, too.
1. Enter the keyword "My Places" (without the quotes) in the
search
line at the top of the screen.
2. Click Go.
3. In the Change My Places window that appears, click the Choose New
Place 1) button.
4. From the drop-down list, choose the place you want listed first and
click it.
5. Repeat these steps (3 and 4) for Choose New Place 2) and so on down
through number 5.
6. When you're done, click Save My Changes.
Keyword: My Places

AOL: THE HOURGLASS IS ON HOLD
Like any program or online service, AOL sometimes freezes.
(Let's not even get into any discussion of whether it is
more likely to freeze than most.) Here's what to do if the
little hourglass freezes on screen, telling you that AOL is
in limbo:
* Wait two minutes. If the problem is merely that the big
AOL computers are busy, this may bring a resolution.
* Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, and then in the dialog box that
appears, click on the America Online (not responding) line
and then click on the End Task button.

Hot Shareware: Windows 98 Shutdown Supplement
This patch addresses shutdown issues on systems with specific
hardware/software configurations running Windows 98 Second Edition.
The issues include systems restarting when the user selects the Shut
Down command and systems hanging during the shutdown process.

Internet Explorer: FASTER ADDRESSING
You probably know that if you enter a Web address in the Address bar,
Internet Explorer 4/5 adds the appropriate prefix and suffix for you. In
other words, type
wazdisdo
and IE 4/5 adds the prefix http://www, then
cycles through domain
suffixes (such as .com, .edu, and .org) until it finds a match.
Here's a quicker way to fill out addresses:
Instead of typing all that stuff like http:// and www, I've found
that all I really have to do is type the middle of the URL and press
Ctrl-Enter. For instance, if I want to go to Yahoo, all I have to type
in the address window is:
yahoo
Then I press Ctrl-Enter. It works perfectly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Explorer: A QUICK SEARCH
You can quickly run a keyword search right from Internet Explorer 5's
Address bar. Just type a question mark, followed by the word you are
searching for, like so:
? blacksmith
Then press the Enter key. If your search contains more than one word,
you do not need to type an extra question mark. For example, just
type:
? job opportunities
The results appear in the main browsing window.

Outlook Express: LET YOUR MODEM DO THE WALKING
If your modem is connected to the same line as your voice phone, you
can use Outlook to dial. Follow these steps:
1. Choose Tools + Dial.
2. Select New Call.
3. In the New Call window, either choose the contact from the Contact
drop-down list or enter the number you want to dial (you can also
choose recently dialed numbers from the Recently-Dialed drop-down
list).
4. If you want to keep track of having made this call, select Create
New Journal Entry.
5. Click Start Call.
When the call goes through, pick up your telephone handset and talk.

Cool Website of the Month: PRESIDENT MATCH
http://www.presidentmatch.com
If you still haven't decided who you're going to vote for this
November, then this site is here to help. If you'd rather be charmed
by televised interviews and staged baby kisses, great. If not, then
President match provides you with concise profiles of each candidate,
outlining their views on a number of issues. If this is too much work
for you, then head over to the Decision Guide. It will ask you some
simple questions and then pick a candidate for you. It's almost like a
dating service, just don't expect these ineligible bachelors to return
your calls after election day.

see
ya soon!
